Nutley, N.J. - A $5,000 grant from The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation will allow the Phoenix Center to conduct a therapeutic horseback riding program, a bowling league, and a recreational swimming program for its adolescent students with autism as part of its overall educational program.
The Phoenix Center is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit private school for students on the autism spectrum and those with other severe developmental disabilities. 146 students aged 5-21 attend the school located in Nutley, NJ. Students hail from 56 towns in nine New Jersey counties including Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union and Warren.
"Our goal," said Dr. Geraldine Gibbia, Executive Director of the Phoenix Center and Wyckoff resident, "is to provide inclusion opportunities in less restrictive settings, to provide programmatic excellence in a small nurturing environment, and to empower our students to become independent members of society. This amazing grant from The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation allows us to do that by providing our students with opportunities others take for granted -- normal recreational activities like horseback riding, bowling, and swimming."
The Phoenix Center was co-founded in 1991 by Dr. Gibbia and Dr. Douglas Berrian. Dr. Gibbia also serves as the Second Vice President of ASAH, the New Jersey Association for Private Schools for the Disabled.
The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation, located in Ridgewood, awards grants to residential, recreational, vocational, educational and family support programs that benefit adolescents and adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
"The Phoenix Center’s recreation program for adolescents is an important part of the curriculum that will create opportunities for socialization and skill development and we are so pleased to support the dedicated efforts of Dr. Gibbia," said Linda Walder Fiddle, Executive Director of The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation.
